An annual conference for developers, Google I/O is usually full of announcements. The American firm is not limited to tools or software and this 2022 edition looks promising. Let’s discover together the new features that could be unveiled.
The Google I/O 2022 conference is fast approaching and is about to return to an almost normal pace. The last editions have been greatly disrupted by the Covid-19, even pushing the Californian firm to cancel its event in 2020. Like last year, it will above all have to be satisfied with a virtual session 2022 with very little attendance. Sundar Pichai and the Google teams do not want to take any risks, but the program promises to be busy.
Android 13 and software announcements
First intended for developers, the Google I/O is focused on software and tools announcements. The event presents solutions that will soon be in the hands of professionals, but not everything is intended for these specialists. The conference is often an opportunity for Google to deliver a preview of the next version of its operating system.
The existence ofAndroid 13 is no secret and we have already been able to discover the first features of the Developer Preview. The firm has recently taken a new step by launching the first beta intended for the general public. The mobile OS, however, keeps its share of mystery and has not yet revealed all its secrets. It is expected that Google will communicate more regarding Android 13, in order to present the main novelties.
Among the features to expect, Google wants improve the security of your operating system by adding new options. A new authorization system will appear to allow the user to keep control over his data. It will be possible to let an application only access a specific type of file (photos, videos, music, etc.). For example, a photo application may only access the phone’s photos and videos. Until now, Android provides full access to storage when an app requests it.
Android 13 should show its novelties
The arrival of this version will be an opportunity to offer spatial audio or to offer new wifi permissions for nearby devices. This latest innovation aims to better respect privacy users. Finally, Android 13 will try to stand out from its competitor iOS by offering many customization options. This will range from quick settings that will better take into account third-party apps, to the taskbar and icons.
The group should also reconsider its calendar and the release date of the final version. Development is not experiencing any delays and Android 13 should make an appearance on a handful of smartphones in the fall of 2022.
During the event, Google could also discuss Android 12L and provide an update on Google Assistant. The I/O conference has often been the scene of stunning demonstrations, with features rolling out later this year. The connected home is also a recurring subject, Google being very present in this area with its Chromecast, Android TV devices, or connected speakers and screens. The firm also mentions a “new era for Google Home”.
Finally, it could be a matter of Wear OS 3. The operating system for watches made a lot of noise last year, but it only stands out on Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 so far. A situation that could push the search giant to review its plans…
Pixel Watch, Pixel 6a, Pixel Buds Pro… the hardware in the spotlight?
Even more than in previous years, there could be many hardware announcements in 2022. The most anticipated concerns a watch and not just any watch: the PixelWatch. After years of waiting, Google finally seems to want to try its luck on this segment and the leaks have been multiplying for a few weeks.
Pixel Watch: has the Google Watch time come?
The signs multiplied with many noises from the corridors, until the discovery of a prototype… in a restaurant. We have already been able to show you this “lost” Pixel Watch from every angle and we are now waiting for its officialization. With the acquisition of Fitbit and the merger with Samsung to merge Wear OS and Tizen; Google has all the cards in hand to finally present its first connected watch. The Pixel Watch would also run under Wear OS 3.1 and promises to be a rather high-end tocante, rival of the Apple Watch.
Pixel 6a: a new mid-range approaching
The other highly anticipated announcement concerns the world of smartphones. the Google Pixel 6a should be presented to offer a mid-range version of the Pixel 6 series. We have already given a full update on this smartphone which will succeed the Pixel 5a; which paid a high price for the health crisis and the shortage of components. The device would offer a design similar to its elders, in a more compact format with a 6.2 OLED screen displaying in Full HD +. The refresh rate could reach 90Hz.
Under the hood, the Pixel 6a makes very few compromises and should offer the American giant’s Google Tensor chip. Thanks to Google’s optimization efforts, it could even offer slightly better performance than its predecessors. On the other hand, it would be satisfied with 6 to 8 GB of RAM, against 12 GB for the Pixel 6 Pro.
In order not to overshadow its big brothers, the photo part promises to be less ambitious. The mid-range smartphone would not benefit from the same developments as the latest models. It would be closer to previous models by betting on two 12-megapixel modules on the back.
12.2 megapixel (wide-angle) and 12 megapixel (ultra wide-angle) sensors are mentioned. If the configuration may seem light, Google has mastered its subject and knows that it is not always necessary to embark on the race for megapixels. For selfies, an 8-megapixel camera would be present. A final point concerns autonomy, with the probable presence of a 4,800 mAh battery with 30 W fast charge.
Pixel Buds Pro: the announcement that dreams of making noise?
The latest rumor concerns the possible arrival of a new pair of headphones. From Pixel Buds Pro would be about to be introduced to compete directly with Apple’s AirPods Pro or Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro. Such an announcement will mark Google’s entry into the premium segment, having launched affordable Pixel Buds A-Series. Little information has leaked out about these “Pro” Buds, but it is expected that the manufacturer will finally offer active noise reduction on its headphones.
Google Pixel Fold: the chef’s surprise?
Less likely, the Google Pixel Fold talk about him again and could arrive in 2022. However, we do not expect to see this folding smartphone at the I / O conference even if Google is making efforts with Android 12L. This version thinks of folding devices and has revived the debates around Google’s projects. The latest rumors point to some resemblance to the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
When will Google I/O 2022 take place?
The Google I/O 2022 will take place on May 11 and 12, 2022 Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, California. The two days of conferences can be followed on Google’s YouTube channel or on the site dedicated to the event. In French, the latter also details the program and confirms that it will be about Android; cloud, Chrome OS, Google Play, or even Google Pay and Google Home. The program is ” a little different “ this year as Google explains, but it is particularly busy.
Le Journal du Geek will be mobilized to make you discover all the news and announcements of Google products.
